My visit to Avlos Greek Cuisine

Avlos Greek Cuisine encompasses Greek food and culture in its small nook on Bridge Street in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. As you walk in the door, you are welcomed with a quaint space, low lighting, and artistry that showcases Greek culture. From the art on the walls to the plates on the table, the restaurant pays homage in many ways. The wait staff is eager to assist from the hostess stand to the start of service, making the customers feel welcomed and taken care of from the moment they walk in the door. Our server was well-versed in her menu knowledge, provided the specials without hesitation, and answered every question we asked before we ordered.

The menu offers a variety of Greek-themed plates for reasonable prices. My meal started with a plate of octopus served over a bed of hummus, paired with red onions and capers. As a first-time octopus eater, I found that it was cooked to perfect crisp, not overly chewy, and bursting with flavor. The hummus toned down the fishy flavor of the octopus, while the pickled red onion brought a zing for a flavor bomb in one fell swoop. For the main course, we ordered a lamb gyro stuffed to the brim with lamb, red onion, tomato, and tzatziki sauce. Every aspect of the gyro was full of flavor and well-balanced, with every bite having every aspect of flavor included. The second entree ordered was the seafood special of the day, a white fish cooked in a lemon-butter sauce, served over a bed of garbanzo beans and spinach. The white fish had a subtle flavor that paired well with the lemon butter sauce. The spinach and garbanzo beans balanced the palate and added extra texture to the meal. Lastly, we obviously had to order baklava for dessert. The portion size was impressive for the price. The baklava was drizzled in honey and pure perfection. As a baklava regular, I would say this was in my top three I have ever had. Though I will note that other times I have ordered the baklava from Avlos, it was made differently and tasted more store-bought than made in-house.

Overall, Avlos is ranked in my top three restaurants in Phoenixville. The calm ambiance, paired with the inviting service, makes this the perfect date spot any time of the year. I will be dreaming of the octopus until I have it again, and will be doing my best to mimic the lamb gyro in my own home. No matter how hard I try, I will not be as satisfied as I was at Avlos.
